The Reality of Prayer and Fasting: A Journey Beyond Misconceptions
One of the major misconceptions about openly committing to a life of prayer and fasting is that it suggests we are individuals who don’t face “real” problems. This perception couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, many who dedicate themselves to these spiritual disciplines often find themselves grappling with significant afflictions, all while yielding to the leading of the Holy Spirit. As James 1:2-3 reminds us, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." There’s nothing glamorous about prayer; it’s a rigorous journey that unfolds daily.
When we commit to a life of prayer and fasting, we begin to see things as they truly are, rather than how they appear. The revelation of truth that emerges through prayer starts deep within the heart of the individual. As Proverbs 4:23 advises, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." This heart transformation is essential for genuine intercession.
Intercession requires a daily introspective approach. It challenges us to "die to self" publicly each day. In Galatians 2:20, Paul writes, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." This disconnection from worldly desires allows us to be introduced to the spiritual realm. We come to realize that God is TIME; He reveals Himself outside of time as we know it (2 Peter 3:8).
As we embark on this journey, it’s crucial to surrender today and strive to go deeper than yesterday. In Romans 12:2, we are encouraged to "not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." This transformation empowers us to discern the will of God—what is good, pleasing, and perfect.
Let’s move forward together in this journey of prayer and fasting, embracing the truth that we are all on a path filled with challenges and growth. We’re headed somewhere beautiful together. Let’s get ready!
